Do not treat the two families as a temperature ladder
High alumina brick is not automatically the correct upgrade for every zone, and fireclay brick is not simply a lower-cost substitute. Their suitability depends on the combination of chemistry, mineral structure, hot load, thermal cycling, corrosion, abrasion and lining design.
Start with the approved plant specification or the actual failure mechanism. A change of family can also affect mortar compatibility, joints, heat-up and neighboring materials.
Understand how the families are classified
ASTM C27 classifies machine-made fireclay and high-alumina brick using characteristic properties and chemical analysis. It notes that fireclay classifications use physical properties because alumina and silica contents can overlap, while high-alumina classifications are based primarily on alumina content.
That classification supports consistent communication, but it does not select a product for a specific furnace. The purchase order still needs a current grade, property limits and test methods.

Compare service conditions before comparing numbers
For each zone, record normal and upset temperature, atmosphere, contact material, load, cycling and mechanical wear. These conditions determine which properties deserve weight in the comparison.
A backup layer, furnace wall, hearth, burner surround and kiln transition zone may require different decisions even when all are described generally as an industrial furnace lining.

Compare equivalent test evidence
Ask suppliers to state the same units, test methods and specimen conditions. Apparent porosity and bulk density should be compared using equivalent procedures; dimensional acceptance should use the project's specified method and tolerances.
Separate typical public data from guaranteed order limits. A higher cold crushing strength, density or alumina percentage on unrelated test bases does not by itself prove longer service.

When each family may enter the shortlist
Fireclay bricks may be evaluated for suitable furnace, kiln, flue and backup zones where their physical classification and service behavior meet the design. High alumina bricks may be evaluated where the required chemistry, hot-load behavior and wear conditions call for that family.
These are screening directions, not universal application claims. The final selection should be checked against the exact furnace zone, current lining design and approved specification.
Send an RFQ that produces a comparable answer
Provide the current grade or target standard, brick drawing, quantities, service conditions and wear observations. Ask each supplier to identify exceptions rather than silently substituting a different test basis or grade.
Include inspection, packing and delivery requirements in the same request so the technical comparison is not separated from the supply scope.
