Silica Bricks for Coke Ovens: Specifications to Confirm Before RFQ

A coke oven silica brick inquiry should connect the current acceptance standard to the exact oven zone, controlled drawings, thermal behavior, inspection plan and delivery sequence. This guide helps buyers prepare a comparable RFQ without treating a historic grade table or a generic silica brick name as a complete specification.

Start with the current acceptance basis

GB/T 2608-2025 is the current Chinese national product standard for silica refractory bricks and replaced GB/T 2608-2012 in February 2026. The older coke-oven-specific YB/T 5013-1997 record is marked withdrawn, so it should not be copied into a new RFQ as if it were current.

State the governing standard, revision, plant specification and order-specific grade. If an existing oven drawing or maintenance document cites an older standard, ask the owner or engineering authority to confirm the current acceptance basis and any approved equivalent before requesting offers.

Map the exact coke oven zone and work scope

A coke oven battery is not one uniform refractory duty. Heating walls, chambers, regenerators, roofs, charging openings, doors and localized repair zones differ in geometry, heat transfer, cycling, load and exposure.

Identify whether the inquiry covers a new battery, planned cold repair, partial rebuild or operating-temperature repair. For replacement work, include the current brick grade, remaining lining, damage map and approved repair method rather than asking for a visually similar product.

Define thermal and mineral requirements with named tests

Silica refractory behavior depends on mineral conversion, temperature history and the way the oven design accommodates expansion. Chemistry alone does not show whether a brick package will match the approved wall, joint and heat-up design.

Ask for the properties required by the governing specification, together with units, test methods, specimen conditions and acceptance limits. Keep guaranteed contract values separate from typical brochure data, and leave the final expansion allowance and heat-up procedure to the approved oven engineering package.

Control every special shape through drawings

Coke ovens can use many interlocking and special-shaped refractory units. Small dimensional errors can accumulate across a heating wall or chamber and affect joint quality, assembly and gas tightness.

Issue controlled drawings, a shape-code register and quantities. Identify critical dimensions, tolerance methods, inspection templates, pre-assembly requirements, brick marks and the pallet sequence required by the construction team.

Separate conventional brickwork from repair products

Conventional silica brickwork, high-thermal-conductivity products, zero-expansion repair bricks and modular fused-silica blocks are different technical routes. Public supplier portfolios confirm these alternatives exist, but they are not automatic substitutes for one another.

For repair inquiries, document the remaining lining, joint condition, access, operating temperature, damage depth and restart plan. The proposed product and construction method must be reviewed against the oven design and the approved safety procedure.

Make inspection specific to the supplied lot

Define the lot, sampling, dimensional checks, laboratory tests, witness points and retest rules before production. Certificates and inspection reports should identify the contracted manufacturer, exact grade, batch, test method, result and applicable acceptance limit.

For complex shape packages, connect inspection records to brick marks, pallet numbers and the bill of materials. A report for a similar grade or a different production period is not batch evidence for the goods being shipped.

Protect the installation sequence through delivery

Packing is part of the technical scope when a battery package contains many shapes. Confirm pallet construction, moisture and impact protection, marks, packing lists, spare shapes and the loading sequence before shipment.

The commercial offer should match the approved bill of materials and identify included mortar, spares, inspection documents, Incoterm, destination, required date and any site-service boundary.

A complete first inquiry reduces the risk that suppliers quote different grades, shapes or inspection scopes. Send the technical and commercial inputs together and require every deviation to be stated clearly.
