How to Select Refractory Materials

Material selection is a zone-by-zone engineering decision. Start from the dominant damage mechanism, then confirm installation and procurement constraints.

Start with the failure mechanism

Separate chemical corrosion, infiltration, abrasion, thermal shock, hot load and structural movement. Several mechanisms may act together, but one often controls campaign life.

Choose the material form

Bricks provide controlled shapes and joints. Castables create joint-free linings around complex geometry. Fiber products reduce stored heat in suitable clean-service zones.

  • Shaped bricks for dimensional control
  • Castables for complex or joint-free construction
  • Ramming, gunning and plastics for installation constraints
  • Fiber and insulating products for heat-loss control

Check installation reality

The best laboratory property is not useful if the site cannot mix, place, cure, dry out or heat up the material correctly. Align the product with installer capability and shutdown time.
